Topic Area: Water Management

Project duration: January 1, 2017 – June 30, 2019

Beneficiary countries: Ukraine, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Serbia

The overexploitation of water resources, water regime modifications, water contamination and a growing number of flood events — the negative effects of which are amplified by climate change — are issues that require harmonised, integrated action on the part of the management authorities in countries that share river basins. The Jaroslav Černi Institute for the Development of Water Resources participates in project implementation together with 11 project partners and 5 Associated Strategic Partners from five countries that share the Tisza River Basin to foster collaboration among key stakeholders and to address common challenges in order to propose sustainable solutions that enhance the status of waters in the basin. The main aim of the JOINTISZA project is to further improve the integration of water management and flood risk prevention planning and actions for the next river basin management planning cycle, in line with the relevant EU legislation. The key output of the project will be an updated Integrated Tisza River Basin Management Plan, which already includes key aspects of the EU Flood Risk Directive. The International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) Tisza Group and EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) Priority Area 4 platforms will build bridges between stakeholders for the transfer of information from expert to policy level, while the management and communication plan developed during the project will ensure the wide-ranging involvement of target groups. Project pilot actions will also provide a platform for information sharing and interactive learning.
