altGeneral Description

The Kolubara Coal Basin is located some 50 km southwest of Belgrade. It extends to Koceljeva to the west, Rudovci and Prkosava to the East, Stepojevac to the North, and Lajkovac (Slovac) to the south. The basin envelops the middle and lower courses of the Kolubara River and its main tributaries: the Lukavica, the Peštan, the Turija and the Beljanica to the east, and the Tamnava (including the Ub) and the Kladnica to the west. The east-west axis of the basin is 55 km long, and the north-south axis is 15 km long. Parts of the municipalities of Lazarevac, Obrenovac and Koceljeva lie within the basin.

Of the total surface area of the basin of some 600 km2, geological exploration has revealed coal deposits on only 167 km2. The remainder is barren land, from a coal mining perspective.

The Kolubara River divides the basin into eastern and western areas. The eastern area lies between the Turija, Peštan and Kolubara rivers. Based on the extent of past exploration and the level of preparedness for open-pit mining, this area was sub-divided into nine extraction units: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, Veliki Crljeni, and Šopić-Lazarevac.

The Vlasina HPP simulation model is comprised of: a simulation model database, a user interface, and mathematical simulation software. The database is GIS-oriented (Arc Hydro model) and contains all necessary information about the system (data sets, performance characteristics, thematic river basin components, and the like).

Training of the Peštan River PDF Print E-mail

Geological Background Information and Data Required for the Development of a Preliminary Design for the Training of the Peštan River and Flood Evacuation Control


The lower course of the Peštan River intersects the Kolubara Coal (lignite) Basin. It crosses the future extraction Field E and, in the vicinity of its confluence with the Kolubara River, the South Field. Since these two open-pit mines will constitute the coal extraction focal point of the Kolubara Coal Basin in the foreseeable future, the river channel will need to be re-aligned in due time to free-up the area of future activity, and flood waters of the Peštan River will have to be controlled to protect mining operations.
