Belgrade’s water supply largely relies on water wells located along the Sava River and water withdrawal directly from the Sava’s main stream (currently at a rate of 3 m3/s). In view of increasing water demand, plans call for additional withdrawal of some 2 m3/s directly from the Sava River. The water intake facility is located on the right bank of the Sava (rkm 9+300). It was designed to support the future Makiš 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant. The rate of raw water withdrawal from the Sava will be increased from 3 m3/s to 5 m3/s.

The water intake protection design included:

  • Assessment of hydro-mechanical equipment performance;
  • Surveying of the water intake and identification of the level of siltation;
  • A submerged structure upstream from the water intake, to reduce river sediment ingress;
  • A floating structure, to prevent the accumulation of floating and hovering debris at the intake basin entrance;
  • Water intake monitoring and maintenance facilities and procedures.

A steel floating barrier will prevent the ingress of floating and hovering debris and sediment into the water intake. An existing underwater sill will be extended by some 10 m.
