The designed concrete gravity dam "Foča" has been tested on a hydraulic physical model in order to justify the proposed technical solution.

The physical model is in 1:45 scale, with Froude's conditions met, and it encompasses a 270 m long part of the reservoir basin, stilling basin area of the dam, and some 440 m long downstream stretch. The selected disposition includes a spillway located on the right, and a machine building in the left half of the dam. The spillway is made up of four spillway segments, controlled by radial gates. The drainage structures are dimensioned so that the 1000 years of high water may spill through any three (out of four) spillways, without any danger to the safety of the dam. Besides, it is necessary to meet an additional criterion, i. e. that the dam can safely manage 10000 years of high water when all its gates are open. By measuring the flows, velocities, water levels and pressure values on the model, the flow conditions in the zone of the dam facilities under applicable scenarios have been established.

Based on the results of the model tests, the following conclusions have been reached:

  • Spillway capacity of the "Foča" dam, measured on the model, exceed the projected values.
  • The water levels measured in the reservoir are lower than the projected normal backwater elevation (403.00 mnm).
  • Water flow conditions at the end spillway segments are not hydraulically favourable, especially at the far left spillway segment. Changing the geometry of that area would result in a more favourable hydraulic image at the spillway.
  • Hydraulic jump is formed in the stilling basin, but at the applicable flow value, due to incomplete expansion of the jet, a secondary hydraulic jump occurs downstream of the stilling basin.
  • The velocity values recorded in the section downstream of the stilling basin are relatively high, so it is necessary to provide adequate protection against erosion.
  • The tests carried out on the HPP have indicated the existence of a differences in the conditions of water flow towards the left and towards the right large turbine, hence the necessity to examine the geometry of the zone located immediately upstream of the damthe in the main design.
