Two campaigns were undertaken to study the impact of the Iron Gate 1 HPP reservoir on riparian lands in the 70.30 m a.s.l. backwater regime:

  1. Monitoring and assessment of the impact of the Iron Gate 1 HPP reservoir on dike stability, and
  2. Monitoring and assessment of the impact of the Iron Gate 1 HPP reservoir on the groundwater regime and riparian drainage systems.

The Town of Stari Kostolac is located on the left bank of the Mlava River, between an arm of the Danube (the Dunavac) and relatively high terrain. Most of the town lies along the edges of a terrace toward an abandoned strip mine filled with barren land up to an elevation of 71.50 m.

The slopes and beds of certain sections of the canals running to the drainage system pumping stations had caved-in due to seepage instability, largely caused by:

  • Unfavorable lithologic makeup of the setting;
  • Elevated piezometric head along canal routes, particularly during periods of high river stages; and/or
  • Sub-standard pumping station performance (irregular operation and considerable water level fluctuations in the intake basin).
