Applicability  
The model can be used for mathematical simulation of wastewater evacuation under different scenarios. Scenarios assume a combination of drainage conditions, with and without rainfall, various downstream boundary conditions (recipient water levels), various rates of infiltration of “extraneous” water, and a number of accident situations (failure of pumping station or wastewater evacuation network components).

Technical Characteristics
Using this mathematical model, it is possible to assess the operational readiness of an existing urban drainage system, generally one of the costliest components of a city’s infrastructure. Based on various analyses using the model, significant savings can be realized within the existing wastewater and stormwater evacuation system, and particularly savings tracing to future enhancements aimed at expanding and upgrading the system. Additionally, based on the existing condition and capacity of individual components of the system, and accident situations which include flooding caused by heavy rainfall and/or high stages of the Danube and Sava rivers, the model can be used to optimize system management under such scenarios.  

Description
This hydrologic-and-hydraulic model of Belgrade’s sewerage system was developed using the MIKE URBAN software package. The model was designed for a GIS platform and all model data are stored in an ESRA Geo Database.  As such, the data can be used by means of standard GIS applications, so that the model is not limited to hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, but can act as a valuable information resource both at present and in the future, with the anticipated development and application of information technology in the management of complex systems. 
The model was built using prior field and laboratory research, conducted with the primary goal of defining existing wastewater flow rates. Measurements of wastewater quantities which are evacuated by portions of the sewerage system were performed, and voluminous data pertaining to water invoiced to all users of the Belgrade Public Water Supply and Sewerage Company’s services were processed and analyzed. The model was calibrated based on measurements made at discharge outlets and the hydraulic load was derived from water quantities invoiced to users and the rates of infiltration of surface water and groundwater. The calibrated model was then used in further analyses of various wet and dry period scenarios. Accident situations were also assessed.
